Did the 1973 oil crisis cause energy research and progress that affects us today?

Yes for car industry 1. Development of fuel efficient 4 and 6 cylinder engines 2. Synthetic oil development 3. Gasoline additives and the elimination of lead from gasoline in 1976. 4. Development of bio fuels from corn 5. Higher government guidelines for car manufacturers (MPG). 6. Nuclear power industry development due to transportation and mining costs associated with coal as a fuel source for generating electricity. 7. Natural gas public buses developed. 8. Railroad industry increased due to high cost of diesal fuel. 9. Electic heat pump developed for home heating and air conditioning due to high cost of heating oil. 10.Nuclear powered ships for the Navy were further developed. The list is endless. These are just a few.Did the 1973 oil crisis cause energy research and progress that affects us today?
Don't know what the history books say, but I was there.

There was a relatively short-lived focus on fuel efficiency that did have some positive effect for a while. Examples:

National speed limit of 55 mph (No longer in place).

Incentives for fuel efficiency and economy (Discontinued and just now returning).

Significant political pressures on OPEC nations (not only discontinued, but now they have all the political pressure on us).

many more...

So to answer the question in reality (non-politically-correct-non-textbook) is that in the late 80's we got fat dumb and happy again and have been on a downhill slide ever since. We are just now starting to wake up again.

Hope it lasts this time.Did the 1973 oil crisis cause energy research and progress that affects us today?
Yes. Very likely the answer they are looking for.
