anyone have an idea of what might cause this? also the car still runs greatI was changing my spark plugs today and to my surprise there was oil in the cylinder.?
if you spark plug tubes that go thru the valve cover it may just be the valve cover gasket,if there was oil on the spark plug wire when you removed it are you noticing any smoke fron the exhaust pipe.I was changing my spark plugs today and to my surprise there was oil in the cylinder.?
It depends on the engine type. If you have an overhead cam engine, it is likely the spark plug seals that come with the valve cover gasket. When you remove the valve cover, you will see seals at each plug hole that look like large o-rings. If you have an overhead valve motor, or those seals are not the problem, then the oil is leaking either through the valve seals or the piston oil rings. If it's just a seep, you may not notice the telltale blue-grey smoke from your tailpipe yet. A good differential for this is how much oil and where. If you are finding oil on the plug boot, in the plug hole and the back of the plug then it is something external leaking (like the valve cover), but if the oil is only on the electrode side and not found elsewhere, you probably have an internal problem.
It could be a bad valve cover gasket allowing oil to leak in. Hopefully thats the whole problem. That would be a easy fix. Worse case it could be a blown head gasket which could get kind of expensive to repair.
Find yourself a trustworthy mechanic to give the car a once-over and check it out for you.
if you are talking about oil in the tube around the spark plug, then there is a seal or a gasket that is failing. replaced then on my wife's car last year for the same reason. you just need the valve cover gasket kit( the deluxe one with everything
Make and model might help.
