The price of oil permeates every aspect of the economy. Not only is oil needed to power the plane and ship the goods to where they are wanted but it is used in making the products also. When you fly you have oil to thank for your seat, the carpet, and most of the rest of the interior, not to mention the ink used to print the ticket. In book publishing oil is used to make the ink and the adhesive that holds the book together. Oil is not only used to make the tires and tubes for bicycles but the seat and the paint.

As you can see the price of oil and gasoline is far more deeply embedded in the price of goods than most people realize.
